from Born Too Late (1986)
Selection made by Stephen O’Malley:
I would like to propose a great anthem of despair and gloom to you from a perspective of a metalhead. Lyrically akin to the bare and raw decline Knut Hamsun presented in “The Hunger”, Scott Weinrich lays forth a psychodrama’s far wake of self imposed isolation, fear and loneliness, and eventually solitude as a result of alcoholism. Superficially the story is nothing extraordinary at all, but Wino’s delivery and the fact that its absolutely not a fictional story at all ring clear and true through his audience. “I’ve lost all my friends & lovers”, I was fortunate to witness St.Vitus recently in Paris and the darkness in the lyrics took be aback, even shocked me, although I had listened to their catalogue countless times over the years. Some even bleaker modifications were made to the lyrics announcing to the world that it hardly gets easier over time… “I’ve lost my children”. Its the philosopher’s stone of doom.
