from Sapphie (1998)
selection made by Francesco Tenaglia:
If the contest that gives the title to Guy Maddin’s movie “The Saddest Music in the World” really existed, this song would probably kick every other participant’s ass. It comes from a guy that you wouldn’t necessarily associate to sad songs and it’s not the “desperate” school of sad, more like a perfect interpretation of bittersweet abandonment to sadness. And it’s perfect. You might object that Richard’s voice sounds often fragile and chord progression is linear but there is something here that makes me want to go back to it again and again. Every time I’m overwhelmed, this is magic.
