One of my favourite songs and one of the saddest songs I have heard is definitely ‘Drop’ by Red House Painters from the album “Ocean Beach”. There was a recent solo live version by Mark Kozelek that you can find on the ‘Nights’ CD that came with his book… it is simply the most soul rending thing I have ever heard. It never doesn’t destroy me when I hear it. There is something about the melody and the lines:

all the love in an instant
makes my life stop
but then my hate for you
makes my feelings altogether drop
